Worst Internet Wi-Fi Dead Zones in U.S. Cities (2025)

Remote work, streaming, gaming, and online schooling have made reliable internet a daily necessity. Yet in 2025, many neighborhoods across the U.S. still suffer from poor Wi-Fi performance, frequent outages, or no broadband access at all. These "internet dead zones" aren’t just in rural areas—they exist in urban apartment complexes, growing suburbs, and even tech-centric cities. This report highlights the worst places for internet connectivity in America and explains why these digital deserts persist.

Top 10 Worst Internet Dead Zones in the U.S.

Based on FCC data, Reddit complaints, speed test results, and user-submitted experiences:

  1. Venice Beach, CA
Beautiful coastline, but aging infrastructure. Residents report frequent outages and inconsistent speeds from Xfinity and AT&T.

  2. Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY
Many buildings lack access to Verizon Fios, leaving residents with slow DSL or expensive, unreliable options.

  3. Hyde Park, Chicago, IL
Despite proximity to major universities, internet infrastructure lags. Spectrum and AT&T users report repeated slowdowns.

  4. Oakland Hills, CA
Hilly terrain and limited fiber coverage make internet access spotty. Frontier customers suffer frequent dropouts.

  5. East Austin, TX
Fast-growing area with demand outpacing infrastructure. Many zones lack fiber and suffer from congestion.

  6. East Cleveland, OH
Residents are often stuck with legacy DSL. Few providers offer high-speed upgrades.

  7. South San Antonio, TX
Limited provider options and low competition lead to poor service reliability.

  8. South Bronx, NY
Spotty Fios deployment and lack of ISP investment hinder connectivity.

  9. Detroit's West Side, MI
Redlining of services persists—many areas underserved or forgotten by ISPs.

  10. Kaneohe, HI
Island geography and older networks leave many users with limited speeds and frequent service disruptions.

Why Internet Dead Zones Still Exist

  • Lack of Fiber Investment: ISPs often avoid upgrading areas seen as low-profit, including low-income neighborhoods and complex multi-dwelling units.

  • Outdated Infrastructure: Many buildings and regions still rely on DSL or coaxial cables that can't handle modern bandwidth demands.

  • ISP Monopolies: Without competition, ISPs lack incentive to improve service or pricing.

  • Geographic Barriers: Hills, dense tree coverage, and high-rise buildings interfere with signal quality and delay infrastructure rollouts.

Most Common Complaints by ISP

Xfinity

"I'm paying for 800 Mbps and getting 50." — Glendale, AZ. Frequent complaints in high-density housing, older buildings, and areas without fiber.

AT&T

"AT&T still hasn't upgraded my neighborhood from 10 Mbps DSL." — Suburban Atlanta. Some areas stuck with legacy copper lines, especially in Southern states.

Spectrum

Users in Florida and Texas report daily outages and unreliable speeds during peak hours. Infrastructure struggles to keep up with suburban growth.

Frontier / Verizon

Limited fiber rollouts leave users dependent on outdated DSL. Complaints rise in California and parts of the Northeast.

How to Check If You're in an Internet Dead Zone

How to Improve Your Coverage

  • Upgrade Equipment: Use a Wi-Fi 6 or 6E router.

  • Install a Mesh Network: Great for large homes or multi-story buildings.

  • Switch ISPs: If multiple are available, compare them by performance—not just price.

  • Talk to Your Landlord: Landlords can negotiate bulk fiber deals with providers.

Why I Am Dropping Frontier TV: Commercial Interruptions During Live Hockey Games

As a dedicated hockey fan, there's nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of watching a live game. The thrill of seeing your favorite team battle it out on the ice, the tension in close matches, and the pure excitement of a last-minute goal are experiences that are irreplaceable. Unfortunately, my time with Frontier TV has marred these moments, and I’ve reached my breaking point with interruptions on TNT and ESPN during the Stanley Cup Finals.

How Does Our "Worst Cell Phone Coverage" Page Fall From Top 10 to Top 60 in 1 day?

Verizon is evil logo

"Worst Cell Phone Coverage" Google Search Console

We have always been suspicious of Verizon and its marketing tactics over the last 2 decades and I am even more suspicious of them now.  Here is why . . .

Verizon Wireless recently overtook AT&T Wireless as having the most cell phone coverage complaints in our dead cell zones database.  AT&T for the longest time has had the most complaints.  However, I have noticed a huge difference in Verizon's network performance lately and think there is a lot more parody among the carriers depending on where you are.  Verizon doesn't have the best coverage anymore in our opinion and the database based on complaints confirms this.

Here is a map below that shows you the count of complaints in our database and Verizon now leads the pack.  This doesn't surprise me as Verizon has always been arrogant about its marketing and claims.   I recently have had several horrendous customer service experiences with them as well.

Search engine optimization is now a huge game in that these carriers invest millions of dollars per year to try and squash competitors and negative press.  Verizon has hundreds of people on staff that look at websites like ours to try and discredit the validity of the content using dirty SEO tactics.

Our page "Worst Cell Phone Coverage" had been getting a ton of traction with Google and huge engagement in searches recently largely because consumers know they are getting screwed by many carriers in certain places.  Why would this page suddenly fall out of the top 10 and move to 50+.  The result is this page doesn't perform anymore for some reason.  Did someone file false claims on the page to Google?  I am very suspicious and would like to get to the bottom of it.  Why would a perfectly fine page fall out of the top 10 so suddenly?   We have changed nothing on this page recently.

Why Your Home Cell Phone Signal Has Stopped Working

cell towers vs distributed antenna systems
Cell Towers vs Distributed Antenna Systems

If you live in a rural area of the United States it is likely that your cell phone signal strength has been fluctuating or might have dropped entirely in recent years as carriers move from 3G to 4G LTE.  Wireless carriers are increasingly moving services in areas from the very tall cell phone towers to the smaller distributed antenna systems as you see in the picture above.  Why?

These very tall cell phone towers can provide 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE coverage of 1 to 2 miles and service several thousand people and homes from a single tower.  Carriers are increasingly dealing with capacity issues on these tall towers and have to turn wireless signals down or off in areas on antennas where there are congestion problems (too many users) or not enough customers (not profitable).

This could result in your home that previously had several bars of cell phone signal suddenly not having any signal at all.  The wireless carrier may put up a DAS system in your neighborhood to fix the problem if you complain enough.  DAS or Distributed Antenna Systems are essentially smaller and lower power cell towers that are installed on top or inside of buildings or utility poles most commonly.  DAS antenna systems will provide service to a smaller number of people.  The theory is that your signal will be more reliable and faster.

Unfortunately, the FCC or FTC has no mandate for the wireless carrier they have to inform you of changes in signal strength in your neighborhood.  Carriers might not even reflect this coverage accurately on their coverage maps for several years.  Deadcellzones.com has been operating for the last 18 years collecting complaints on a map of where customers have trouble getting cell phone signals.

The complaint latest trend in the industry seems to be carriers optimizing their networks in markets and dropping coverage for "unprofitable" markets.  There is no guarantee that coverage will be provided at your home and this is the biggest portion of customer traffic adding data to the dead zones map.

I am curious what some homeowners have done to remedy this problem with carriers.  Please comment below if you have any feedback or suggestions on how to solve this problem with each carrier.  These carriers have gotten so big that bureaucracy is probably the biggest obstacle to getting solutions for customers who have lost good home cell phone signals.

Is Apple Creating Bugs To Trick People Into Buying New Phones?

When Will Congress & EU Investigate Apple for Antitrust Issues About Purposely Creating Bugs to Trick People Into Buying New iPhones?

Have you ever asked yourself why your iphone keeps crashing every October or November before the Christmas shopping season?   I think this coincidence of this annual phenomenon is actually done on purpose by Apple secretly to trick people into thinking that they need to buy new phones.

Apple has created an amazing business through planned obsolescence but ever since Steve Jobs passed away they have not innovated enough that would entice most frugal people enough into buying the latest new iphones.   I think Apple knows this and is not purposely creating bugs in the iOS operating system to make people think their phone is defective.   If the truth was ever was to be investigated and discovered I think this could destroy about half of the companies market capitalization.  Watch Apple's stock if you ever start to hear about an investigation like this.

If you understand the software business it is not hard to imagine why Apple wouldn't purposely create bugs in their operating system to trick people into thinking their phone is now defective.  Everyone I talk with who owns an iPhone thinks they need to buy the latest iPhone hardware in order for their phones to continue working.

The Android World is much difference and Google does a much better job of releasing updates and that are consistent with the phone hardware.  You can use an Android phone for many years after a phone is released.  However, older iPhones seem to get bloated with worthless software and bugs that seem to crash and clutter phones with things you really don't need.

Another thing that Android does is allow you to offload photos to Google Photos easily for minimal costs and doesn't scam you into thinking you need to buy iCloud storage to backup.  This is such a scam by Apple.  If you are a sophisticated iPhone user having Google Photos backup and remove all of your photos is essential so you don't have to use Apple's worthless iCloud storage.

Would love some Apple supporters to comment on this below.

How to Search Database by Date Submitted?

How to Search Database Dead Zones by Date?

Our database has been around since 2001.  However, we only have data from 2008-2015 on the map published as of today.  You can now search the entire live database by date.  See the example above.

In the future, we will be logging dead zones on a month-to-month basis and selling reports to carriers who want only recent problems.  However, we all know that dead zones and coverage problems can persist for a long time and that is why continue to publish the data until a carrier can confirm that the problem has been fixed.

If you are interested in reporting coverage areas that have improved please read the previous link?

We also publish date-based heat maps of the coverage problems reported so you can see the reports evolve over time.

Why is Verizon Wireless Reception Poor on the East Coast?

Does Verizon Wireless use a different frequency on the East Coast vs the West Coast?  We have also been receiving a great number of complaints for Verizon since the iPhone and iPad 3G CDMA devices have been available on their network.   On our Verizon Dead Zones map which collects anonymous complaints from customers has been receiving a greater number of coverage complaints proportionately in Eastern States like New York, Florida, Georgia & New Jersey.  What is the the explanation for this?  On the West Coast we tend to get more AT&T Wireless dead zone complaints versus Verizon.  Is this because their is a great concentration of iPhone users in the West Coast cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco?
