Cell phone data throttling works by limiting (throttling) the rate at which a phone accepts and sends data to the network.  Data caps work by charging you additional fees per MB you use over your allotted data plans.  Mobile phone data throttling is a reactive measure employed by the cell phone networks to regulate network traffic and minimize bandwidth congestion. 3G and 4G throttling occur typically when a heavy user of data has exceeded their monthly data limit. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint & now T-Mobile use wireless data bandwidth throttling to help reduce a user's usage of data. Carriers do this action to limit a user's upload and download speeds on mobile applications.

Some carriers like AT&T & Verizon may not throttle your data but will begin to charge you extra for exceeding data plans as well which we call data caps.  Carriers like T-Mobile and Sprint who offer unlimited data plans will limit or (throttle) your speeds if you exceed their monthly thresholds.  We think there is a need for carriers to provide better applications for measuring mobile phone data usage.

Mobile video is congesting networks  & continues to be 66% of network traffic volume.  Mobile video download traffic is already exceeding forecasts from 2010 and carrier networks are struggling to keep up with the growing data demand.  This is another reason why we think data caps are also killing the mobile phone application ecosystem.

If you read the details of the "unlimited data plan" it says the following: Includes up to 2GB of high-speed data on T-Mobile's network instead of standard 500MB (as part of our Simple Starter plan).



T-Mobile Data Plan Usage
We called T-Mobile today in order to purchase more data since our current 2GB data plan ran out apparently.  As you can see by the chart above we don't use more than 1GB of data per month on average.  If you are traveling and using Google Maps for navigation you won't be able to very easily if they cap your plan and turn the data off.

Why am I not able to purchase another 1GB or 2GB of data?  You can't according to the customer service person I spoke with.

T-Mobile proceeds to send me survey questions over text on how easy it was to resolve the issue.  All of my responses of course were 0.  There is not solution to the problem of purchasing more data.

It might be time to consider a data plan from Republic Wireless.  Its a pre-paid data plan that will work on T-Mobile's network.  All you need is a SIM card and you can use T-Mobile same phone.

Consequently, reasoning between the two groups will most certainly vary. Mobile users, listen to my words - DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR UNLIMITED DATA PLAN. Sure T-Mobile and others still offer it, but the cellular savvy knows that other companies like Verizon and AT&T are essential ‘where it’s at. For starters, carefully scrutinize all ‘new offers’, weighing your decision before taking an attractive subsidy on a free phone, rendering your hard-earned unlimited data plan moot by being forced into a tiered/family plan. There are a number of paths to go here, and in this case, I’d recommend the one less traveled for the purposes of saving money and long-term entrapment.

By all means, continue to enjoy HD video, rich media, and robust offerings – with discretion and planning of course. Naturally, all of these great things consume exorbitant amounts of data, and it's especially difficult to keep track of such usage since these numbers are not as cut and dry as minutes. Though companies like AT&T and Verizon offer online data calculators to give ballpark figures for data use, it is hardly an exact science. Alas, you may quickly find yourself speeding towards or exceeding your cap, racking up an exorbitant bill in the process (Note: AT&T and Verizon charge $10 per GB in overages) All things considered, it’s simply impossible to keep track of usage progressively, with apps running in the background and data spikes incurred from streaming high definition video or audio – so what’s the problem if I’m holding onto my unlimited data plan, you ask?

Well, big providers have mulled this over for a long time, and are truly never losing on the infinite media playground. In fact, both AT&T and Verizon were found to have throttled the top 5 percent of data users. Once you’ve been marked as a heavy data user, your access will be slowed during congested network times to free up bandwidth. What does this mean? The catch-22 is that this long-time, loyal subscribers won’t be able to fully enjoy new rollouts with an outdated phone that struggles to run them. I offer this advice: for the avid user of advanced features (who still has an unlimited data plan), it simply makes sense to hold on tight to that infinite data allowance by purchasing new devices on eBay (or comparable online marketplace) for a one-time fee and selling old ones to mitigate the total cost. For the rest of us, high expectations are going to naturally come with likewise prices. Without vigilance, the term pays now or pay later comes to mind in more than a literal sense. Whatever your circumstances, I wish you the best.

If you are the typical consumer you are likely using 50% of your voice minutes, more text messaging and more data.  It's kind of crazy that 70% of your monthly bill is comprised of talk minutes yet you probably use data on the phone 90% of the time.  Another thing that is crazy is that you are likely uploading and downloading most of your data on your home Wifi network.  You are already paying for this data access and your cell phone company does not provide you with any transparency of how much data you are using on the 4G network.


With all of the problems the carriers are having getting their data networks in order.  They should be helping their customers use their 3G and 4G networks less and encourage customers to offload data via WiFi.  I think the future of 3G and 4G or LTE networks will be as a last resort and Wifi will be the standard now that hotspots are growing 5X faster than cell phone towers. AT&T was the first carrier to do this by removing all you can eat plans.

WeFi is a WiFi hotspot location service that works on a netbook, laptop, Symbian and Android platforms. The company helps members find nearby hotspots, complete with maps of their locations. There are also Symbian and Android mobile apps to work with WeFi on the go. The company collects anonymous data from devices that connect to a hotspot via the service, along with general information like how many devices are connected to a particular hotspot. That surprised me to see all of the free Wifi web usage and carriers need to change quickly as AT&T Wifi only has 20,000 free locations and this needs to change quickly for them to keep up.

Boost Mobile  - No Contract: for $40 per month with unlimited talk, text, data, no roaming charges. 3G is available with some phones.

T-Mobile (Best Value!)- No Contract for $40 per month which includes unlimited data on 3G and 4G HSPA+ Blackberry phones will cost you $50 per month for unlimited data.  If you are an older customer hopefully you have been grandfathered into their old plan which costs $25 per month.  

Sprint - Requires a 2-year contract for $69.99 per month which includes unlimited data, text, and calling.

AT&T data plan - plans range in price from $15 for a 200 MB data plan and $25 per month for 2 MB. If are conscious about downloading video on WiFi their pricing plans might work for you. Caution because just like texting they have crazy data charges of $10 per 1 GB of data if you go over and the data is not reusable on monthly basis.  AT&T is also rolling out a 4G HSPA+ network.

Verizon Wireless - Requires customers to buy a mobile package that is more than $30 per month and you’re limited to 5GB per month.  They do have an LTE network coming out in 2011 but this will require you to purchase an LTE compatible phone.

iPhones Beware of AT&T's 200MB Data Plan

Watch out iPhone users AT&T is at it again trying to rip you off.  Do not sign up for the AT&T Data Plus 200MB monthly data plan because you will likely use this amount of data in the first hour of use if you have a lot of applications running.  Also, as you are driving around in the car Apple and AT&T will not tell you that more that half of the data usage is for data signaling as your phone travels between cell phone towers. It has also been reported that the iPhone FaceTime app uses roughly 3MB of data per minute.  So even if you are not using your phone to do any of the in the chart below you will still be incurring data charges.  Even if you have purchased AT&T's femtocell (Microcell) you will still incur data charges towards your phone usage on the network.  This is also appalling and a rip off as well.  
We recommend sticking with Wi-Fi as long as you can as the big carriers still think they can take advance of the unsophisticated users.  There is still very little transparency and reporting about your data usage and I expect to see many class-action lawsuits as a result.  The monthly bills are starting to come in and if you are not diligent you may find yourself in cell phone billing hell.  These figures above pertain to other smartphones and do not represent normal data usage on iPhones.
